Remote desktop technologies enable users to connect to computers located in a remote site in order to access applications and data located on those computers. As processing is carried out on the host computer, Remote Desktop connectivity uses less internet bandwidth than alternative VPN (Virtual Private Network) solutions and could potentially save on PC replacement costs.
Microsoft offerings include Remote Desktop connection available in Windows as well as Terminal Server which enable multiple users to access a single host computer/server. Other remote desktop products include Citrix XenApp.
